Financing was always shaky and it never fulfilled the initial plans, which called for retail development in the lower floors of both towers and part of the parking decks, the kind of "mixed-use" that is becoming popular. It went steadily downhill, hit bottom and was bought by an outfit that hoped to renovate the place on a shoestring budget. Or something. That effort failed and it's in a very blurry receivership.

And it's plenty scary. Our unofficial advice from local LEOs was, "Do not go there alone."Roberta Xhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09956807794520627885noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837660608809488753.post-49572796113373076322009-01-26T01:31:00.000-05:002009-01-26T01:31:00.000-05:00Okay, funny story: I know exactly where this story...Okay, funny story: I know exactly where this story took place. I had a hunch early on, but when you described the parking platform and the spiral staircase, I was sure. I go past them every time I go downtown. I always wondered what the deal was with those buildings. They were occupied when I was a kid. I liked them.

Although I will admit that now they just sound scary as hell. :-PJoannahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10952078709114872197noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837660608809488753.post-35254618687437390452009-01-25T01:00:00.000-05:002009-01-25T01:00:00.000-05:00Nice read, Roberta!!Nice read, Roberta!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837660608809488753.post-67238395955851504732009-01-24T12:07:00.000-05:002009-01-24T12:07:00.000-05:00Thanks for the latest installment, Roberta. This ...Thanks for the latest installment, Roberta. This is going to make a great book sometime ... whether as short stories or an integrated novel. I come looking everyday to see whether you've done another one.

Regards.Georgehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08123244406605096484noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837660608809488753.post-4766404268605547902009-01-24T10:09:00.000-05:002009-01-24T10:09:00.000-05:00Thanks! This one, I wrote right in Blogger's "new posting" window. So they tend to be a little rough. Unlike most postings, I will go back and edit starship stories without notice.

Note the lack of redshirts, ray guns and deus ex machina. There aren't even any bug-eyed monsters -- though whoever was in that building might've been bit bug-eyed at the hubbub my guys were making! I'm all in favor of a sense of wonder, it's just usually I'm wondering about simpler things, like, "How loud a splat would I make if I fell?"
