I am fond of "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas," which is just the thing to lay bare for an undergraduate audience the ultimate inhumanity of utilitarianism.Kenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04780425923108876647noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837660608809488753.post-33635761930422499982015-01-14T22:19:02.879-05:002015-01-14T22:19:02.879-05:00The Left Hand Of Darkness is a classic, set in the...The Left Hand Of Darkness is a classic, set in the same Hainish Cycle universe as The Dispossessed. I enjoyed her more recent Hainish book, The Telling. And for some rare LeGuin whimsey, Changing Planes is fun. I'm not a big fan of her "Earthsea" fantasies. LeGuin is a woman of her place, time and class, but she manages to bootstrap out of it from time to time; a lot of libertarians get fussed over her harsh treatment of a capitalist nation in The Dispossessed while missing that she built her own ideal utopia on Annares and then mercilessly pointed out the ways in which it falls short. We may disagree in many ways but she's not stupid or shallow, and handles the language beautifully.Roberta Xhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09956807794520627885noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5837660608809488753.post-16041830895724438182015-01-14T15:51:01.383-05:002015-01-14T15:51:01.383-05:00Although I have only read two LeGuin books, I was ...Although I have only read two LeGuin books, I was impressed with both. I was particularly taken with the success strategy in a world with no property rights in Dispossessed. The other book I read was Lathe of Heaven, also good. Any recommendations from a fan of what a good next read might be? Thanks in advance.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
