Moving Update

So with "only" books (60 boxes!), clothes and housewares to unload, Tam took a spill on the moving van's icy ramp about the time I was docking with the U. S. Starship Wolfe. She's sore and stiff and seeking heat and horizontality. (Here's one reason why "Northerners" are considered dour: 'tis a harsher environment. We get a lot more ice and snow. It, in turn, gets us and we begin to think that's the way of things, forgetting many folks live in more clement latitudes than ourselves. Knoxville, for instance).

An hour after Tam went slideabout, I put my right thumb into the muffin fan on a compresser/dehydrator. Hardly a wrenched back but not a lotta help, either.

Overtime on the moving van's like $40 a day extra, unloading help starts at $230 for two guys/three hours. I can do math. ...An' I needed exercise anyway. Where're those work gloves? Where's my knee brace?

  1. If I weren't 100 miles away, I'd offer to help

  4. oh dear. I wish you both happy mending.

but, hey, on the upside? You both are super cute so big hunky guys shouldn't be that hard to find (& put to work)!

  5. I'm with breda on this one. Actually, though, I'd just go ahead and pay the $230 and have the pros come in - that way, the guys go home immediately after the van's unloaded, etc. But $230 just to show up? That's bull corn.

  6. Yeah, you had better get on her good side.

    She's probably gonna sue ya.

(And if I were in the same time zone, I'd be on the way. I'm not very bright, but I can move heavy objects.)

  7. A) I'm insured
    2. I didn't rent the van
iii: So, say she sues me and wins, what's she get? 98 cents equity in a 1923 bungalow, a few thousand tatty paperbacks, a two-year-old Indian-made motor scooter, an MGB that hasn't run since 1996 and a beat-up '02 Hyundai. Plus a heap of crummy old electronics of demonstrably no worth and my carry guns and the laundry gun. [slim-pickens] "A feller could not have a pretty good weekend in Vegas with this."[/slim-pickens]
Fourth, Too late! I have plied her with Bazebeaux pizza. With capers. Better than a Vulcan mind-meld.

  8. You take good care of my friend, now. They don't make that model anymore.

  9. A), 2., iii, Fourth??

What are you a gummint file clerk?

Sounds like an inventory at my house, except less cars and more paperbacks.

Here's hoping for a speedy recovery and a rapid departure of the large wheeled object in your driveway.

Mark, as usual, more eloquent and accurate than me. And what breda said.

  10. $230 for 2 guys to help you unload???? What's the matter, you couldn't have put out a call on your blogs for some weak minds and strong backs?? I'm sure that more than a couple of your fans would have been happy to help you unload for a couple of pizzas and some cokes or beer. I know that I would have been there, and I would have brought my own dolly.

  11. We hinted, Andy -- oh, how we hinted!

Well, the die s cast; and given the vast disoranization we've both achieved due to the move, perhaps just as well none of our firends see it.

Rain check? We really, really wanna set up a Hoosier gunblogger gathering soon!

  12. PS: Rickin8or: I stole that method of numbering from fellow Indianeapolitan Michaal Z. Williamson. I admire it.

Gummnit numbers are strictly ordered. In the ones I see most often, the least-signficant are paras. a) through z), then numbers (with decimal extension) then, oh, gosh, I think capital letters and then Roman nummerals. And that gets you to CFR volume number. (You can look up the citing format. It's beyond Byzantine). Joy.

  13. Roberta, you have to do more than drop hints, some of us old farts have to be hit on the head with a two by four. Next time, put an ad on your blog and watch the help appear.

  14. I tried to ignore the burning question. I really did.

    But I have to know...

    How many books per box?

  15. We ran the numbers quickly; the SWAG, call it ~1700 books, 75% of them hardback. 70 boxes. The rest is left as an exercise for the reader. (This does count toward your final grade).

  16. My library is somewhere around 5000 volumes, if I count the old radio books. The fiction is mostly paperback. Not a bad start...

  17. Now 5000 is respectable.

Last time I checked Delicious Library it was somewhere north of 4K, but that's just the dead tree editions. In 2000 I transitioned to ebooks (Saves space) and I have several thousand of those too.

Unfortunately all my paperbacks from the 80's and earlier are falling apart. I had to search the used book stores for hardback versions of the Heinleins because they were worn down to pages in a bag.
