Mostly I was remembering chasing fireflys (lightening bugs, not heroes of a Joss Whedon SF classic) while camping as a child, back when Dow Chemical was buying them by the bushel to study chemical luminescence.
I considered post a comment to ask him how to make Infra Red chem lights, those were pretty handy. We'd tape one in a rat trap with a trip wire, it worked better than a pop-up flare, as long as you had NVGs.
