The Ancient Greeks and Romans might not have had television or even tabloid newspapers, but they knew how it works and personified it as a minor deity: Pheme or Fama, who, "had her feet on the ground, and her head in the clouds, making the small seem great and the great seem greater."
True that -- especially the bit about "making the small seem great."

This sounds like yet another Tea Party talking point. :)
Saw her as Rumor in a translated version of Virgil's Aeneid.
Thousands of eyes, thousands of ears, would repeat anything and spread it to the ends of the earth.
She even has a Theme Song! "Fame! I want to Live Forever...."
A girl that will kiss on the very first date is probably a hussy.
A girl that will kiss on the second time out is certainly not fussy.
But a girl that will wait til the third time around, head in the sky, feet on the ground, SHE'S the one you're glad you found, she's your Shipoopi... err... ShiPHEME
