The lead units, wearing the kepi blanc, would be the Foreign Legion. That lead platoon would be their Sappers, the leather apron is part of their uniform. They are traditionally bearded, and carry an axe on parade.
I found the inclusion of heavy engineering equipment on the prime movers (flatbeds) interesting. Based on the inclusion of police and fire units, I'm wondering how much of the Horse units were army (or, Armee) and how much police.
