Ouch.

Take it for what it's worth -- it was a comment over at Charles Stross's blog -- but oh, dear:
From anecdotal evidence, the two branches at university libraries that have the biggest problem with stolen books are law and theology.
Most politicians are lawyers. A few are theologians. If I was looking to recover stolen books, I know whose libraries I'd check first, and it wouldn't be the members of those two groups who aren't holding or running for office.

  2. I've been told the most 'missing' from public libraries nationwide are the Bible and the Alcoholics Anonymous book...

I'm guessing thy've not yet sought redemption of done their inventory...

  4. Immediate public hanging upon conviction of library book theft.

This would soon result in either more honest politicians and/or theologians, or a reduced population of same.

Either result is acceptable to me.

  5. Just so you know, in the US, most university law libraries are separate entities and NOT a part of the university library. Since our library has been getting rid of over 2/3 of our collection (everything is online, don'tcha know?), we are kind of happy when people take our reporters and law reviews, so that we don't have to recycle them.

  7. We couldn't give 'em away, believe it or not. We tried.
We did use a bunch of them to make a Christmas tree though.
