I Was Saving This For Washington's Birthday

But in honor of Monday's muddled mess known as "President's Day" while really only meaning to include two of them, this item:

Ah, George. And to think you only got the dollar bill.

  1. Of course, there are a lot more dollar bills in circulation that anything else...

  2. Well, Washington's portrait went onto the dollar bill in 1869, when men made maybe a buck a day, most folks wouldn't have seen anything larger.

  3. Of course Washington was a Southerner; but that fella Lincoln - he invaded Texas.

He thus gained the ire of a host of my ancestral kinfolk, who were enraged enough to take up arms to try to keep the Yankees out of Texas. They were actually reasonably successful at it but eventually ran out of ammunition; no love lost here for the Railsplitter.

Hooray for Washington - the man who could have been king, but refused the offer of a crown. This left even George III Rex in awe of Washington's sterling character and noble heart. We should all remember that.

  4. When in elementary school in the early '60s our winter holidays were Lee-Jackson Day in January and Washington's B'day in February.

  5. Well, he did throw one across the Potomac.
After he confessed to chopping down the cherry tree, presumably.
