I don't know if it's round-trip or not, but who cares? The top-level Hackaday Prize is an all expenses paid trip to space!
It's no quiz show, Roy Malcom, nor will Clifford Russell need to keep buying soap and writing slogans: to win this one, you need to be a Number One Alpha Geek -- and you've gotta invent the future.
Offer does not apply in Italy, Quebec, or in a number of grotty little autocratic and/or theocratic states. I have no idea how the first two made the list; they might want to look into that.
(While I'm linking to books we read as youngsters, remember the Winston Science Fiction Series? Good stuff -- and that cover art!)
It has been a unique experience rereading the books I read as a teenager. Robert Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" was exciting enough as a teenager. Decades later, there are whole layers of complexity I missed. The movie & TV series pales in comparison.
ReplyDeleteThere was a TV series?
ReplyDeleteAnimated series made by people who didn't get all of the complexities of the movie so they dumbed it down. G.I. Joe in space basically.
ReplyDeleteNo. Just like there wasn't a movie.
ReplyDeleteEw.
ReplyDeleteSigh - all these years, and I still haven't gotten over my desire to track Paul Verhoeven down wherever he hides and kick him right in the...
ReplyDeleteOh, wait. What was this post about?
Quebec has a strange law that makes most promotional contests illegal in the province.
ReplyDeleteStarship Troopers is a great book. I think Heinlein was amazingly prescient in creating a society in which only veterans can vote and become teachers, judges or police officers. Imagine a country where there is no Common Core and the police don't maim children with flash-bangs.

"No. Just like there wasn't a movie."
ReplyDeleteJust like there was never a Highlander II.
Actually, there's a TV series (which... wasn't all that bad, for saturday morning cartoon fair), a Movie Series... (They made more. The first was the best by a long, long margin... which is kinda sad...)
ReplyDeleteAnd I suppose inevitably... and Anime.
If you had to subject yourself to one of them, subject yourself to Roughnecks. (The Cartoon) - while its hardly RAH's poorly concealed political rant (which, I'll admit, I love) its by far the least offensive of the bunch. Tells a better story too.
I had forgotten about the TV series.
ReplyDeleteI demand a trigger warning.
More earn than win that trip.
