  1. NOT WISHING TO BE "STERN" BUT AT TIMES "AUGUST" MAY I OFFER A CLARIFICATION OF MARITIME TERMS AND SUGGEST A BETTER REWRITE

"HO" IS USED BY THE LOOKOUT TO REPORT AN INITIAL SIGHTING TO THE WATCH OFFICER AS IN "SAIL HO !" (THE REPORT COULD BE LAND HO SMOKE HO LIGHT HO ETC)

THE WATCH OFFICER REPLIES "WHERE AWAY ?"

LOOK OUT ANSWERS USING THE 32 POINT SYSTEM OF RELATIVE BEARINGS IT MIGHT BE AHEAD OR ASTERN OR ABEAM OF THE VESSEL(PORT OR STARBOARD) DEPENDING ON WHAT HE SEES HE MIGHT SAY "STAR SHIP 2 POINTS ABAFT (AFT OF) THE PORT BEAM FLYING THE JOLLY ROGER CATS ON THE BRIDGE HOLDING A SIGN DEMANDING BACON"

THE WISE WATCH OFFICER ORDERS THE LOOKOUT RELIEVED AND NOTES THE TIME USING 0000-2359 SYSTEM AND LOGS "UNDERWAY AS BEFORE- NO REMARKS"

"AHOY" IS USE FOR HAILING CLOSE ABOARD AS IN THE WATCH OFFICER HAILS "SMALL BOAT AHOY ! WHO ARE YOU ? STATE YOUR INTENTIONS!" FOLLOWED BY THE ORDER TO THE QUARTERMASTER TO "SOUND THE GENERAL ALARM GET OUT HERE NOW AND BRING THE LMG (WITH 2 BELTS) WITH YOU MOVE !"

ON A MORE BENIGN NOTE ALEXANDER GRAHAME BELL USED ON HIS EARLY
TELEPHONE THE PHRASE "AHOY ! ARE YOU THERE ?" INSTEAD OF HELLO CLASSY VICTORIAN

MIGHT I OFFER THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT FOR YOU

  2. Uh...seriously?

Navigator, there are plenty of decaf brands that taste just like the real thing. Suggest you try one.

  4. NAVIGATOR,

I think you might be sheeted in a bit tight and sailing too close to the wind. Come up any higher and you will have your sheets to the wind and backing with no rudder control at all. Loosen up a bit and fall off and pick up some speed and control and quit using all caps.

Other than that, the correct way to greet another ship in days of old was 'Heave To' and 'hand over your women'.

Um, guys? Not everyone has 20/20 vision. Navs has his reasons for all caps.
