The call came in last night and, eating dinner in the far corner of the house, I missed it. The message was from a club in the northern part of the state and when I called back, they confirmed I'd won a Ruger 10/22 in a charity raffle! A friend had entered Tam and me in it some weeks back and there were some nice guns to be won. This one is third prize, a 10/22 Breakdown, easy to carry to and from the range.
Still working out delivery details, but it's interesting. I have my Dad's old Remington 941 and a much newer Savage, both .22s.* Adding a Ruger will be nice.

* While it's not true that I don't have much use for any caliber other than .22, I am very fond of it. Light enough to shoot several hundred rounds in a single practice session, it's what I originally learned to shoot with and face it, if you can't hit the target with a .22, you don't have much hope of doing so with anything bigger. Would you rather be missing at fifty cents a round or ten cents? Or just over nickel per, if the last sales flyer the Data Viking shared wasn't a typo.
Woohooo!
ReplyDeleteFirst thing: replace that stupidly designed bolt release plate so you can release the bolt like you do with every other semiauto rifle in the world.
Bolt release using the MOE is awkward and borderline unsafe.
Tamdenkross sells one called the Guardian that I really like (the little nub you press on to releases protrudes a tiny bit more than factory models) for about $10 or you can modify your own bolt release plate as seen on several YouTube vids.
Modification takes about five minutes with a Dremel or about 15 minutes with the ptoper files.
DO THIS!
You will wonder why Ruger continues to stamp out this part in its current confifiguratuin. Insanity.
Tamdenkross has an installation vid on their site that is very useful. Highly recommended.
Let the mods begin!
Threaded barrel?
ReplyDeleteSuppressors *will* be off the NFA in the near future...
Bobbi,
ReplyDeleteSorry, that is Tandemkross not Tamdenkross. I did not know I was dyslexic.
You'll love it! The breakdown rifles come in a nifty little carrying bag that has room for everything else you'd need at the range.
ReplyDeleteI know it's spending money on a freebie rifle, but I got a set of GI-style aperture sights for about $60 and they're just dandy.
When my wife takes friends shooting for the first time she always starts them on a .22 rifle with a red dot. Totally takes the finesse and intimidation out of it, which is wonderful for new shooters.
I always like it when something good happens to someone I know.
ReplyDeleteAperture sights for sure! The bolt release tab never bothered me so mod or leave alone, your choice. You might want to consider the replacement firegroup for a much better trigger than stock.
ReplyDeleteOverall a nifty little rifle. Accurate(enough), light, and easily packable.
You might treat yourself to a couple of the large mags for mad-minute delights.

Need the deets on that cheap .22 you eluded to in your footnote... :)
ReplyDeleteCongrats! Pics needed, after you get/modify it. :)

Congrats! Yer welcome.....
ReplyDeleteThank you, thank you, B!!!
ReplyDeleteCongrats! Yer welcome.....
ReplyDeleteI bought a cheap little Mossberg 702 plinkster. Paid like a hundred bucks. Put a 2.5 x 7 power scope on it, because, frankly, I had one laying in the closet. I have more fun with that little thing than if I had bought something expensive and had to spend like you said, fifty cents to a buck a round. And I am a lousy rifle shot, so I am learning to get better with practice. Good for you, for winning, and good for you, for kind friends. Have a great time with your new gun.
ReplyDeleteCongratulations, ma'am! To paraphrase the noted philosopher J. Buffett, sometimes the Swamp Creature lets one in. :-)
ReplyDeleteHuzzah for a Raffled Rifle, even better that the ticket was a gift. Enjoy the shooty goodness.
ReplyDeleteSomeone asked about the inexpensive .22 ammo -- it's from a brick-and-mortar store at the far end of the state. Alas, they only sell over-the-counter. Ammunition is so heavy that for most catalog/internet sales, the price of shipping eats up the savings and then some.
ReplyDeleteBut if they can sell 325 rounds for Federal Auto-Match for $17.00, it should be possible to find similar prices elsewhere.
Good for you!
