An Hour And A Half Of Fun?

I watched a few minutes of last night's big Presidential speech and picked up the box scores and highlights this morning: it mostly covered what he's already done. Republicans cheered wildly and offered standing ovations; Democrats sat, jeered a little and held up small, polite signs with simple messages like "FALSE," "MUSK STEALS" and "SAVE MEDICAID."*

In short, nothing unexpected, right down to cantankerous Representative Al Green getting ejected for heckling the President, saying, "You don't have a mandate to cut Medicare."  (A power Presidents, as a matter of law, do not have -- which may or may not carry much weight at present.)

Either you welcome chaos or you don't, and if you do, consider your fellow citizens -- veterans relying on benefits, the elderly and disabled relying on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security.  What did they ever do to you?

But I guess we're finding out now what you will do to them -- and possibly to your own tax return, et Federal cetera.

Tam and I watched an episode of Resident Alien instead, a refreshing, cheerful comedy about an alien sent to destroy the world who crash-lands in Colorado.  Gotta tell ya, in context he seems benign.

We're getting closer to the "This Isn't What I Voted For!" point for a lot of Trump supporters who do rely on Veteran's Benefits, Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security. It's not a new thing for new administrations and usually drives any mid-term wave election.
The big thing is if the Democrats can honestly get their stuff together and offer an actually appealing alternative besides "We're Not Trump!!!". The 2024 voting shift show that a lot of voters really, really don't want the current party platform. I suspect that they're counting on Trump to stupid a Blue Wave for them- this is not the best way to proceed.

Our news last night featured a veteran being interviewed about possible cuts. He said "the budget has to be cut, we have to take our share of it". He just could not bring himself to contradict the Regime. Of course we had others who were justifiably horrified by the possibility of cutting already underfunded VA programs.

The proposal to eliminate the income tax on Social Security benefits has a happy face and a dark underbelly. Most of the benefits would go to the rich, and it'd bankrupt the system faster, resulting in reductions in benefits for all recipients as is required by law.

One thing I've noticed about scams & cults is that it is the suckers who sell & defend it the hardest. Often, it's the suckers who will fight against anything said to the contrary until it's far, far too late to do anything about it.
When it becomes all too clear that it was a scam, some of the suckers will then blame everyone else for not warning them. Others will defend it to their dying breath.
Because there's one born every minute.
