Pop! Pop! Bang!

Tam and I drove out to Pop Guns today in the Z3 (vroooom!), her first chance to shoot since hittin' town and my first since Valentine's day. I hauled along my .22 and the "laundry guns," a CZ-75B compact and an EAA Witness compact in .38SA and she had 1911 and a nice Smith revolver.

My first chance to see Tam shootin' a revolver and the first time I've shot a wheelgun since my ex X-ed out a couple years back. Lady Tam, she groks revolvers just as one would expect: DA, rapid fire, neat tiny hexagonal groups. Me? At seven yards, I can almost reliably keep 'em all on the paper with a revolver. Yeah. Also my hands had forgotten how to hold one properly for reloading -- good thing Tam's a patient teacher!

OTOH, I surprised myself with the 75B, which I had packed up some years ago under the mental note, "Pretty but I can't shoot well with it." I was gettin' close groups and it felt natural; perhaps time with other sidearms has helped me with this lighter gun. And the .38SA was as usual, shot like a .22, right where I wanted it to go -- I love everything about this caliber except the price.

All in all, a fun couple of hours. The SRO crowd at the range was once again a reminder of the value of range membership: right to the head of the line!

  1. Hmm..... thank you for pointing out.....

    I need some range time.
Would enjoy hosting you and Tam to our range sometiem if you are in this area. I think PA and IN recognize each others CCW.... :-)

  2. I recently picked up a CZ 75B with the Kadet .22 conversion and the 9mm assembly. I already had the 75B but couldn't pass up the combination gun. If you think that the 9mm is fun to shoot, you have to try the .22 Kadet. Also went out to the range yesterday (couldn't pass up the 70 degree weather) Took a load of guns out but had the most fun with the CZ Kadet and an old Remington 512. Can't beat the .22 for fun and low cost ammo.

  3. Forgot to mention in my last comment, I went to the Lafayette gun show this weekend (first time that I hit this show), not too far from you and a pretty good little show.

  4. Sounds kewl, Andyj! --Would that we had known of it.

'Teach, I'm pretty sure both states do. Other than transmitter school in Philadelphia (does that count?) over a decade ago, I haven't been in PA since I was in grade school.

  5. Indiana recognizes all other state's carry permits, and foreign countries too! Do any foreign countries even issue carry permits? I don't know if PA recognizes ours.

I didn't know the Lafayette show was on this weekend and I work here! I wish I had, I have a shotgun I need to be rid of and a .22 to buy for my daughters birthday this month.

  6. Are you two planning on going to the Indy1500? I believe the Wife and I will be there on Sunday.

Have you been to the Eagle Creek or the Marion County Fish and Game range?

  7. Good heavens, is it coming up that fast? We'll be there. For sure. Sunday, probably. My inclination is to try to attend on the first and last days of such events.

I've shot at Eagle Creek, an okay range when it is available. MCF&G, no -- I wanna join but it is difficult with my hours.

Is there anywhere close by with a centerfire rifle range? Atterbury's a fun outing but a long drive.

  8. Who doesn't need range time? Range time is the best time.

Pitiably it's 40 miles to my closest outdoor range, and (brr) it's cold as a well digger's ass.

  9. I'm vowing to know range time in the biblical sense. Apparently all the coolest chicks were out shooting on Sunday.

  10. Roberta, this might help for your gun shows. They update it on a pretty regular basis.

I sent this site to Tam right after she moved there.

There is a gunshow in Crown Point this weekend. A couple of hours from you on I-65. It's a pretty good show, not as big as Indy but pretty well represented.

  11. How does the CZ 75B compare to an original Baby Eagle in 9mm?

  12. "Is there anywhere close by with a centerfire rifle range? Atterbury's a fun outing but a long drive."

No place that I know of but I heard a rumor that there might be centerfire rifle lanes in the works at Eagle Creek. Just a rumor though...

I haven't been to Atterbury in a long time. We've been shooting up in Kokomo at my friend's property. We don't really know where else we can go.

  13. Crown Point Gun Show? Maybe. We'd about have to take the Z3, "Hot Needle Of Inquiry," my '02 Hyundai accent being both elderly and beat up, so that's not my call.

I've only shot a Baby Eagle a few time -- Ex had one and I rented one at a range in TX. The CZ is certainly shinier. :) It's also got a better-feeling trigger than the EAA counterpart. As I recall, the IMI version was in between the two in terms of trigger feel.

The frame ergonomics of all three are Hi-Power inspired; they point quite naturally in my hand.

I have never been fond of Tanfoglio's longer and curled beavertail. From memory, the Baby Eagle is more like the CZ in that area.

  15. No waffle and steak in Crowntown. We could go to Bronkos, which is a family dining place, actually cooks the food, normal midwest fare. Also a couple cafe style places, and a couple shot-and-a-beer-and-a-sandwich places. Lucrezia, an italian place. Some delis.

Or I could just buy you a hotdog at the show. They keep the 'regular" gunshow away from the "protocols of the elders of zion" nuts, so it's not too bad.

SHamefully the crown point show is one of the little small-town shows, fudge and jerky and piles of chinese gun cases. And a few of the same vendors as always.

  16. OG- I've got a better place to eat, but it's in Lowell. I usually drive up from Farmersburg, pick up my brother in Lowell, we hit the gun show for 2-3 hours and then go have brunch at "Nellie Janes" in downtown Lowell. It's a small place with GOOD home cooking and a nice atmosphere. Then I have the long drive home.

Sounds like you are not too impressed with the C.P. show. I usually hit as many of the CENTRAL INDIANA GUN SHOWS as I can, but usually in a straight line along the western part of Indiana (from Crown Point to Evansville and most points in between). I think that the C.P. show is one of the better "small town" shows (If you want to see small town gun show, come to the Sullivan show if they have one this year). The Evansville show is pretty good, except that the building where it is held is a little too small. The tables are too close together and not much room to move around.

But you are right, there seems to be a cadre of venders that are at every show. And they are usually located in the same places every gun show. I could probably go into the C.P. show blindfolded and tell you where a majority of vendors are.

But, depending on the weather, I'll be there In C.P. early Saturday morning.

  17. Andy- never been to Nellie's but there is a Schoops in Lowell. George's is pretty good too, close to the xpressway.

  18. Roberta and Tam need to combine their blogs. It's a pain flipping back and forth to follow the story.

    Just a suggestion.

  19. H'mm, quandry; I was all set to write a flippant reply, when I discovered you're an Abney Park fan and therefore get extra slack.

Tam's had her own room on teh intarw3b for, like, ever. Me, I enjoy havin' my own room. Our artistical vibratorizations differ summat.

Therefore, unh, no. We build in links, we're on each other's blogroll, an' we approximate a degree of contrition over this awkward clickage.

  20. Each has a flavor, both are wonderful.

    Not flavors to be blended.

  21. Huh. First person I've "met" who knew who AP was.

The new CD is great, BTW.

Nice that I finally get some slack from being weird.

  22. OG- I asked my brother about Shoops, having never been there, he said that it was one of those hamburger franchises. He said that he went there when it first opened, wasn't too impressed and has never been back. Ah yes GEORGE'S, some pretty fine omelettes. And (pardon my sexism, but old men can be excused) one of the cutiest blond Mexican waitresses that I have ever seen.

Nellie Janes is on the main drag, north side of the street on the western part of the town. It's done up in antiques and from my last visit, some of the most friendly waitresses around. Their food is excellent and you have to try their stuffed French toast. We always get an order as dessert after breakfast.

I hope that the weather holds off, they are predicting snow down here for Friday and Saturday, my brother says that you are only expecting flurries up there on Saturday.
