No, not a resistance movement, not strike forces from the Hollow Earth: Subtropolis, an enormous underground business complex. 'Cos there are lot of things better kept under climate-controlled conditions.
...Besides, some place needs to be on the front lines in the fight against invasions from Pellucidar. Might as well be in Missouri: we'll have 'em surrounded in advance!
Subtropolis is just the largest and ritziest of about half a dozen or so similar facilities in the KC area.

Louisville has a similar facility called the MegaCavern. Basically a huge series of caves that were carved out as an underground quarry. Great place to store stuff if you want it to last forever.

ReplyDeleteBack in my computer fixin' days, I spent a lot of time under KC. One area has entrances for trains---diesel powered to boot. Ever tried to fix computers heavily layered with diesel exhaust?
ReplyDeleteIn another cavern is used for frozen food storage---several square miles of it. There's enough food stored there to feed KC's 1.2M population for 500 years.
All this about 500' under KC.

My daughter used to drive a forklift in one of those caves in greater KC. Guys couldn't decide if they were put off or awed by this fact.
