Saturday Dinner

Haunted by a migraine (etc.) all day, it finally wore off -- ibuprofen didn't cut it -- and I was pretty hungry when it turned supper time. Tam was amenable to steaks a la Bobbi: grilled over hardwood charcoal with a dab of Irish butter -- plus skin-on mashed tatties and a nice herb salad with radish, carrot and green pepper.

It turned out goooood. I threw a teaspoon of curry powder in the potato water, to see what would happen. The water's discarded but a hint of the flavor remained. Didn't have any fresh milk handy but powdered milk (and some of that butter) worked a treat. The steak came out melt-in-your mouth (it's the charcoal, the covered grill and the butter, plus a dash of sumac. Helps to start with very good beef, which we did.). The salad was good, too.

And there will be mashed-potato cakes for brekky tomorrow!

Trivia: There is no frog -- not even a hint of it! -- in Frogmore Stew. What a relief.

  1. Excellent!

I traveled to my parents domicile today and was treated to very old school cooking! Some is now in my fridge waiting on the late night snack! I thought we were the only ones that made potato cakes!

  2. Of course you don't put the frogs in Frogmore Stew. You dip 'em in batter and deep fry 'em.

(Yes, I am a southern boy. Why do you ask?)

So you're laidout by a migraine all day AND you have to make dinner?

  6. "Is Tam's cooking that bad?"

She looked to be perking up by the time I got home from the Fun Show. She offered to cook dinner if I went out and fetched the fixins. I thought that sounded like a splendid deal, and so I took it.

(It's not that my cooking is bad, it's that my repertoire is kinda limited.)

  7. ...Whereas I am a pretty fair short-order cook. Also I hadn't done a darned thing all day but keep quiet and nap a lot, or try to

  9. That all sounds very good...but I think if I make frogmore stew, I'll stick with the pork-based sausage. You also made me go research mashed potato cakes...

  10. Ask your doctor about a new daily medication taken to prevent migrains. I don't know it's brand name but have been hearing good thing's from people who've beenswitched over to it.

  11. That would be "Frog-less Stew" then.
