What Did She Say?

TV Reportrix, yesterday morning: "It was the hottest July on record and August hasn't cooled down. Here at [Name] High School, student athletes are taking a toll on the heat...."

I was aghast. Sure, I snickered -- but on what strange planet does that construction even begin to make sense? It's not even good Pennsy Dutch of the "Throw me down from the hayloft my hat," variety!

Which is a pity, 'cos you could probably fix that by tattooing a hex sign on the offender's forehead.

  2. Sweet! We can get rich charging tolls on the heat now. Can we likewise levy tolls on the snow?

  3. It's the Farnsworth generation-you seem surprised. Or something.
A friend's son has recently married a young lady from Angola. Her English is quite good even though she has only been speaking it for about 3 years. I have cautioned her that the FW is not a reliable reference source for the English language.
