Seriously Loud Horn

Interesting idea: a way to have both a normal and an OMG-loud! horn on your vehicle without extra switches.

The inventor is trying to bootstrap it, which gives you an opportunity to buy one. Have a look and make up your own mind.

I'm considering it.

  1. In TN, oversize "annoyingly loud" horns in cars are against the law. Laws vary by state, of course. :)

  2. I could have used one of those a couple years ago. A dump truck stopped in the middle of the road, and backed into (and somewhat over) the front end of my car. The regular horn was ineffective at gaining the driver's attention. Of course, if he hadn't been on his cell phone, it might have been, and on that same note, it's possible not even this thing would have worked.

    Still, it's a great idea.

  3. In the '70s and '80s, motorbikes weren't as popular as they are now, a side effect of which was they were nearly invisible to the public. One of the better ways at the time to keep an inattentive car driver from shunting you into the verge or another car was to mount a set of accessory air-horns. inexpensive, good quality units were available at most auto parts stores, and came with two trumpets, an air compressor, and instructions to install it. The air compressor was wired through your regular horn button, and powered by the battery.

The set-up took almost no space, even on my clubman bar-equipped cafe bike.

Those air horns saved my life at least twice, and were worth every one of my hard-earned pennies. The question wasn't whether or not a car would merge into you or not, but how hard they would try to get out of the way of what they thought was a Kenworth about to run over the top of them.

I have no idea if they'd be legal today, which is a sad statement in and of itself.
