Ouch-Ouch, Sinus Calling

I have no doubt this morning that my dreadful headaches are sinus-driven. A nice, sharp front gusted through last night -- and woke me up with stabbing pains on the left side of my face. OTC pain med and a hot, moist washcloth took the edge off and I was back asleep in no more than an hour.

But yowza, that was pretty bad when it hit. I could barely stay vertical. Fortunately, there was no need to.

  1. Speaking from experience, I heartily recommend a rice bag for your sinus needs. Put a cup or so of uncooked rice inside a pouch sewn from terry cloth - a tea towel perhaps - and heated in the microwave. Apply to affected area as needed. The heat lasts for a while, it leaves no damp spots and is re-usable. Artistic types like the Boss Lady make very interestingly shaped ones.
    For you I'd suggest one that looks like a Star-Trek communicator....

  2. Roberta, I have the same problem. Throw in smoking and working outside in an environment that makes a coal mine look clean and I suffer greatly. Allow me to humbly suggest the NeilMed Sinus Rinse. It generates more irrigation pressure to clear blockages than a Neti pot, and has been a life-saver. Forget about the special salt refills and use kosher salt. If you can master the technique of rinsing from nostril through the sinus drainage in the back of your throat, and out your mouth, you will be disgusted and amazed at what clears from your sinuses. Just this week I found Jimmy Hoffa, the Lindberg baby and the weapons of mass destruction. It has certainly cut down on sinus infections, pain and upper respiratory infections in my life. All the best! KO

  3. This may sound like a prank of advice, but a cayenne pepper nasal douch. Boil a pint of water, add one table spoon powered cayenne pepper, remove from heat let cool to room temp. Then flush the nasal passages. Will clean out everything in there and prevent flare ups. Sounds bad, but may be easier to get a shot pepper spray into the face, aimed at the nose and mouth. This will clean out everything from a couple weeks back. I know I have done it. Serious stuff for a bad problem. Hope you are feeling better. ATB

  4. I've noticed that AccuWeather.Com has Sinus Pain and Pressure on their site. Looking at the way Global Warming has decided to make me fire up the Snow Blower, you might look at that factor.

  5. Whilst not belittling your suffering (I thought I'd best get that in first before I end up either tarred and feathered, or at least snarked at), I saw this and thought of you!

    THE COMMON COLD by Ogden Nash

    Go hang yourself, you old M.D.!
    You shall not sneer at me.
    Pick up your hat and stethoscope,
    Go wash your mouth with laundry soap;
    I contemplate a joy exquisite
    I'm not paying you for your visit.
    I did not call you to be told
    My malady is a common cold.

    By pounding brow and swollen lip;
    By fever's hot and scaly grip;
    By those two red redundant eyes
    That weep like woeful April skies;
    By racking snuffle, snort, and sniff;
    By handkerchief after handkerchief;
    This cold you wave away as naught
    Is the damnedest cold man ever caught!

    Give ear, you scientific fossil!
    Here is the genuine Cold Colossal;
    The Cold of which researchers dream,
    The Perfect Cold, the Cold Supreme.
    This honored system humbly holds
    The Super-cold to end all colds;
    The Cold Crusading for Democracy;
    The Führer of the Streptococcracy.

    Bacilli swarm within my portals
    Such as were ne'er conceived by mortals,
    But bred by scientists wise and hoary
    In some Olympic laboratory;
    Bacteria as large as mice,
    With feet of fire and heads of ice
    Who never interrupt for slumber
    Their stamping elephantine rumba.

    A common cold, gadzooks, forsooth!
    Ah, yes. And Lincoln was jostled by Booth;
    Don Juan was a budding gallant,
    And Shakespeare's plays show signs of talent;
    The Arctic winter is fairly coolish,
    And your diagnosis is fairly foolish.
    Oh what a derision history holds
    For the man who belittled the Cold of Colds!

    ;-)

  6. You obviously don't want to involve a doctor.

    If it was me, this is what I'd do. This is not medical advice as I am not a Doc.

    I suggest you buy "The Pill Book". It has tons of info for all the ailments you could come across.

    I also suggest you buy FishMox (Ammoxocillin) from Amazon.com for your sinus problems. 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days. Don't stop taking them when you feel better. It won't hurt you.

    I've been a Paramedic/RN for 32 years. I've been a prepper for 10. I do know what I'm talking about. Just Google it.

    In closing, just search Amazon.com for Fish Antibiotics. They have many different Fish AntiBio's. They ARE Pharmacy grade, just like the doc prescribes. I know as I have been taking them myself as needed AND they match the prescribed meds in marking. The pill book will tell you what dosages to take.

    Just sayin,

  7. Oh, I don't mind involving docs; I just haven't had time -- and I believe the exercise to be futile.
