"I'll Rewire Any Child's Brain For Just $99.95!"

There've been some ads like this one running on local TV, only slicker and even more so.

Is your kid mentally askew?  Get him or her rewired, reprogrammed, fixed!  Pound those square pegs into round holes -- you know they'll be happier once they've been trimmed to fit, they'll tell you they are.

Maybe it's just me but it all seems dreadfully like a Philip K. Dick future starring Earl Scheib.  Repainting Room 101 for a new century!

     Interesting links and comments here.

Perhaps they're miracle workers.  It still scares the hell out of me.

  1. I've been hearing those ads too. Makes me think of the Simpsons episode where they flashed back to Ned Flanders' misbehavioral childhood. Ned's father explains to the child psychologist that "we have tried nothing, and we're all out of ideas!"

  2. Those things don't disturb me half as much as the ads for the "Total Transformation Program": http://www.thetotaltransformation.com/

But behaviorists scare me in general.

  3. "Total Transformation" was what I was thinking of,too.

"I'll never forget when my child said he hated me."

Wow! unforgiveable! Off with his head!

Big clue here -- He's a child, and such things are said. It's part of the growing process. Get over it, you're the adult in the relationship. Although I've been thinking of buying it for my brother to use with his wife, because, sad to say, he's the adult in the relationship.

  4. I think most of those programs are like the dog whisperer -- the parents think they're fixing their kids, when really they're being made to fix themselves. Once I realized that, they stopped being creepy.

  5. Sadly, Joanna, what I have read about this franchise operation implies something approaching quackery. Lacking firsthand knowledge, I can only suggest checking out the links.

  6. Speaking of Scientology, did you hear Wayne Green passed away?
