Secret Submarine NR-1

I've been reading about the smallest nuclear submarine in the U. S. Navy, the NR-1, which was, in some ways,  more like a spacecraft than a submarine.  Fascinating stuff, or at least the parts the people involved can talk about are.  The little sub (probably) did a lot of of interesting Cold War-ish things and plenty of it is still a deep, dark secret.

  1. Amazing to think that she's only just being taken apart at the breaker's.

  3. Jaynola: that's not NR-1. She was broken up some time ago. The sail, rudder and propellers are on display at the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, CT. See last photo here.

  4. She was in the yards in 2014, if I remember correctly. Due to her 'issues' it was decided to scrap her rather than put her on display, considering that she was still classified the day she was decommissioned.
