Well, Now

Firefox was very crashy; I cleared out the fattest cookies, deleted Cache2 and did a "restore Firefox," which is supposed to cure such ills, which that made it much, much worse instead.

Dammit.  I don't like Edge and I don't want to have to try to move all my saved stuff over to it.

  1. Hi Roberta,

You might try the Brave browser which is derived from the FOSS Chromium browser.

  2. Dear Ms X,
Have you considered Pale Moon (a Firefox fork, I think) or Brave?

  3. I have been using Brave for a while now. the work machine forces me to edge, but I won't use it on my own. Anything MS pushes that hard cannot be in my best interest.

  4. You probably know this, but one troubleshooting method is to create a new profile in Firefox and see if that is stable. Sometimes profiles get corrupted. Make sure Firefox is closed, then type Firefox.exe -p in the start search box. IIRC, that will start the profile manager, and you can create a new profile. If it crashes on the old one but not the new... I keep separate profiles for general browsing, banking and streaming.

  5. Another recommendation for Pale Moon. Been using it for past few years without issues.

  6. I tried Pale Moon, too many things it didn't do, or did poorly; tried Brave, same story, plus it kept trying to load new stuff (my security software alerts me to that sort of thing), so goodbye, Brave; Chrome is from The Google, so that's out; Edge, well, it's Microshaft and I trust them just as much as I trusted Obama.

So, stuck with Firefox, lesser of the evils as it is. Couple websites offer instructions on massaging the code to limit how much it shares with the Mothership, useful info, even though achieving 0% and having the browser still work is impossible. I've dragged the "setting" icon into the taskbar and grown the habit at each startup of selecting "privacy and security," and manually "Clear all Data" and "Delete History." There's a setting for "clear data and history on closing" but I don't have faith it works faultlessly, so the PITA of a couple extra clicks at startup is reassuring. Might just be a placebo, I haven't crawled through the code to make sure, but what it reports on the surface confirms deletion, and a couple quick clicks during long browser sessions flushes the stored data, cookies and history. I limit what Firefox can do, in Settings, and the frequent nag notifications to update are irritating, but easy to ignore. For a while.

I run the browser in a "(quite) restricted guest user" OS account, so it doesn't get to play outside the sandbox, and I've noticed leaving tabs open, especially too many for too long, makes it unhappy. I also run NoScript, which demands more attention than most people are willing to provide, but it is effective in limiting access and denies entry to a LOT of useless crap.

  7. I don't want to add to your anger... but letting go does relieve care. Spend a life gathering things that make you is fine but there may be time for less.
