Or at least that's the impression given by today's hagiography-disguised-as-news. The Indy [Red] Star does simply -- and simperingly -- dote on gun-banner, drug-warrior, social engineer and fire fan, Dr. Frank Straub.
As for the doctor himself, why, he thinks crime could be driven way, way down by a combination of midnight basketball and compassionate understanding -- like his "aggressive" three-week program in White Plains to "bring together police officers and at-risk youths to help them understand one another's culture." As opposed to, you know, Actual Police Work, out where it's dangerous and "the other guy's culture" consists of sticking a gun in people's faces and asking for funding; breaking, entering and taking; rifling parked cars and unlocked garages; and other such cries for help and compassion at taxpayer expense. (Or cries for a hickory shampoo, but I suppose applying negative reinforcement to unwanted behavior does not exhibit a sufficient measure of treacle-y caring).
Dr. Straub goes up for a confirmation vote this evening, 7:00 p.m. (camo-d00d, that's 1900 hours) at the City-County Building, public assembly room. Please remember, our delightful CCB is gun-, knife-, handcuff key-, etc.-free -- but not opinion-free. We can do better than this disarming New York Ph.D., starting with a guy who understands Indiana's culture -- or who is at least willing to learn -- instead of someone who promises to import wholesale the failed programs and policies that have made the Northeast unsafe, unfree and gettin' worse.

How is is that we ended up with this clown instead of William J. Bratton, who brought CompStat to NYC, LA, and points in between?
Why are we not using CompStat in Indy?
Perhaps that's a question that could be brought up this e'en.
Supposedly, Dr. Straub's all about Comp Stat, too, or at least something with that name.
With all due respect, I live in the Northeast. VT has no requirement for a carry permit. NH's permitting process is fairly simple. CT's is a bit more involved, but if one is denied by the locals, there is a statewide appeals board and appeals are usually successful. NY is more scattershot; it's virtually impossible for the non-well-connected to get a carry permit in NYC, difficult in Westchester and Nassau Counties, but further upstate, it's generally fairly easy.
Dr. Straub can be for CompStat all he wants, but unfortunately his anti-gun stance overshadows that.
Thank goodness for preemption.
Gay Cynic has some suggestions for Camo d00d. A letter to a list...
EB: I'm talking about BosWash, which is hell-on-Earth if you're a gunnie -- and, frequently, if you're not.
I find most Easterners overly meddlesome and condescending to boot. I dropped out of the Free State Project when they chose NH; it's not totally bad but the neighbors...well, it might as well be Canadia.
PS: CT, NY: may-issue for handgun permits, permit-to-purchase required, no provision in CT for lawful carry in your own yard; and this is supposed to be okay? Better than MA, maybe.
Glad to see someone besides me uses the term 'hickory shampoo'
Roberta, in practice, CT is shall-issue. You first apply to your local police for a carry permit. If granted, you then submit that to the state cops and you get a full carry. If the locals deny it, you appeal to the state board they they routinely overrule the locals. Two towns in SE CT were requiring letters of reference and credit checks for carry permits; the state firearms board told them to knock that shit off.
It is far easier to get a permit in CT than people think it is.
