Happy Birthday, NRA!

The National Rifle Association was founded this date in 1871. It's the oldest civil rights organization in the United States.

  1. Founded by a group of National Guard officers for the purpose of promoting marksmanship. And, until late 1968 or early 1969, candidates for membership not only had to pony up the dues - but get their Commanding Officer or their Chief Law Enforcement Officer to countersign their application.

I played tag with a General and the Chief of Police for nearly a week before I could get that signature. I am glad membership is easier now. 'Sta bueno.

  2. Interesting! I've never thought about the NRA being a Civil Rights group, but you're right. Happy Birthday, NRA!
