I've had several cats who seem(ed) fond of mechanical noisemaking: Rustling paper bags, clawing furniture, rattling bottles on the countertop, etc. Dunno whether they're reserving their voices for important stuff like empty supper dishes, or whether it's the plausible deniability aspect.
I note that he achieved his goal of waking you and getting attention paid to him.
