Browser Computer Frustrations

Another morning of frustration with my browser -- but it's not just the browser, it's everything.  My "refurbished" desktop computer has never been entirely happy and is becoming less so.  Time, I suppose, to be looking for another.

In the meanwhile, the Raspberry Pi booted up fine and other than screen size, a couple of pieces of software and issues with saving files on Dropbox, it's an adequate machine.

I have a PI3B+ configures as a 10" laptop in steampunk dress.
As to running the usual stuff its a very adequate machine
and runs a good while on battery.

I just got a Rpi4+(4GB) and that has a lot of horse power.

However if you going to run winders, get something new, cheap
and lots of ram like 12gb or more. Dell is good.

I'd bet putting a copy of Linux on the cranky one would
solve most issues. The reason is likely the version of
whatever OS was install at refurb time was not the vendor
specific version and likely not well thought out.

Computers are in the realm of of it was right at the
start it does not heal without much voodoo.

Coome ooover too the Daarrk Siide Robertaaa. You'll like it here in Linux Land; we have cookies and such. You can make your stubborn refurbished machine into one of ours. And if you can bend a Raspberry Pi to your will, you're already halfway here.

I have a Pi 3B+ hooked up to a 27” monitor and running 1920x1024. Not sure what screen you’re using with yours, but you can definitely drive larger screens at high rez with the Pi.

If things are going downhill, there is probably a reason. Get a copy of SpinRite and see if your disk drive is having problems. (You might know someone who has one, or it is worth having a copy of your own in the long run.)

Failing that, I find that older PCs work better with Linux than Windows. (Mint is a nice distro.)

I'll just replace the computer, if it comes to that. While I like Linux, Scrivener won't run on it and I have yet to find anything like Q10. It has interoperability issues with Dropbox. Office Libre does okay across all platforms except the iPads.

Scrivener runs -- and will share projects -- across Windows, Mac and iPads. All of them will use Dropbox to share those files. The *nix boxes can't.

Roberta, just because you have some very good reasons for not converting to *nix doesn't mean we'll stop proselytizing. It's sort of a hobby. :)

I'm agnostic -- I have Windows boxes, I have the MacBook, I have iPads (a used Mini and a bought-new full size), I have a Kindle (and a backup) and I have the *nix-ish Pi. They are all useful. But some tools only work on some platforms.
