Beneath Contempt

Move over, Andrew Jackson!  Scoot down, Woodrow Wilson!  Man, the kind of talk coming out of the White House these days would have gotten a guy shushed at a John Bircher meeting, once upon a time.

This once was -- and not so long ago -- a country where we'd let people fail on their own lack of merits, as individuals, and figure it was that one guy, or maybe him and his criminal associates, not every person who came from the same place.  It was a country where even a man inclined to wave a broad brush at entire groups of people -- like my Dad, along about the late 1960s, with his first few African-American electronic-production workers in the "clean room," training them reluctantly and pleasantly surprised that they were just as good as their predecessor peers.  A few trainees would wash out every hiring cycle and it was no different that time around, but lo, the skills needed for that job turned out to have nothing to do with the complexion of the workers.

A President who fumes, "Everybody from [foreign nation] is garbage.  They're ruining this country," is talking racist nonsense.  Look, there are people who are harsh judges of character and people who are lenient; that's one thing.  But making sweeping claims about demographic groups is bullshit.  It's flatly wrong -- and so is anyone who overlooks such behavior, no matter what their reason might be.  (Video here -- and my quotes are approximate.)

We're all equal before the law.  That's the notion this country was founded on and has struggled to live up to.  Presidents ought not try to drown the idea in a ditch.  It's unworthy of the office.

Please post the verification of the quote you attribute to the President. I cannot find it. You also mention "We're all equal before the law". That is true, for those of us born here or immigrated LEGALLY. Those that immigrated illegally, do not have that right.

Gutter racism as national policy…

Not only is it despicable, he's infected his entire party. Any public Republican who isn't condemning Trump's racist screeds is ratifying them by silence.

I decided to publish your comment because you raise an important point:

Are you, personally, so ignorant or stupid that you believe what you;re claiming, or do you think I'm so stupid or ignorant that I'll believe you? Or are you so jingoistic that you have decided to believe it?

Let's start with the Bill of Rights, the first ten amendments:
1. Refers to "Religion...the free exercise thereof" and "the freedom of speech or of the press" in the abstract, as universal rights; and "the right of the people
peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government..." without qualification, so, presumably, of all people in the U.S.

2. Once again refers to the "...the right of the people
to keep and bear Arms..." People, not "citizens."

3. Prohibits the quartering of soldiers in a house, "without the consent of the Owner," again, no limitation: any homeowner.

4. Protects "The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures..."

5. "No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury, ...nor shall any person be subject for the same offence to be twice put in jeopardy of life or limb...." "Any person," not "citizen."

6. "In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial...." "The accused."

7. and 8. both speak in the abstract, of the (by implication universal) right to trial by jury, to not suffer excessive bail or fines, nor be subjected to cruel and unusual punishments."

9. Addresses those unspecified rights "...retained by the people."

10. Likewise for "the states" as legal entities, therefore not germaine to this thread.

So which is it: are you ignorant or stupid; do you think I am one or the other and can therefore be hoodwinked; and/or are you so rabidly prejudiced that you will ignore the plain language of the Constitution and want to browbeat others into doing the same?

Trumpism is lawless, ahistorical racism.
