ETA: And, with exact timing, the plumbing stopped up this morning, necessitating plunger work followed by (thankfully, minor) mop work. A half-hour I couldn't spare but couldn't avoid.

As a early riser myself, and a independent contractor. You are correct. Early starts give you more time when things go South. Living here in Mid Maine 60 miles from anything, extra hours matter. Love reading your Blog
Things like this remind me of the book Standard Eastern Tribe by Cory Doctorow. People who naturally settle on a different internal clock and just remotely work in groups with other people of the same clock. Quite a nice extrapolation by Doctorow to the current remote work push and a little beyond.
