I'm Deeply Unhappy

I don't know why.  --Well, I know part of why: I really dislike the hap-hap-happeee Holiday Season.  It's pretty much stress, fear and loathing from Thanksgiving onward, followed by two months of crummy weather, nerve-wracking driving and cabin fever.  And all the sinus/migraine trouble winter weather brings on.

Every year, I stumble into winter promising that if I get through it, one of these damn days, I'm gonna make something of myself. Not doing too well with that.

At least Christmas is over with for another year.

I'd be quite happy to settle down near the wood stove with books and bottles, and not surface for three months.

And I thought maybe it was only me...

I think it's common, as you move into middle age and beyond, to wonder if you're guilty of a wasted life. This feeling, I think, is exacerbated if you've always been something of a misfit.

I think winter tends to wear harder on those of us who aren't social butterflies.

Full spectrum lights and exercise tend to help with that. As far as wasting your life, I think this blog goes a ways toward averting that.

I'm with ya, sister! I hate the Christmas season. Maybe if I had kids I'd enjoy it better, but it is just stress to me now.

I'm with Carteach, but I need to get me a woodstove.

Ditto RobertM and especially Bob: I have reached that age when I wonder if, indeed, I've wasted my life. The dark, cold winter days do nothing to give one a more cheery environment for introspection.

If you've not read it, may I suggest "Self-Dependence" by Matthew Arnold?

And, for what it's worth, right many people check out your blog on a regular basis. Obviously, you're contributing something to somebody, and should be proud of yourself.

Don't give in yet. You still have the New Years Eve manure to go through.

This is not my time of year either.

Go out side and start a snowball fight. Good for what ails you.

Perhaps you need direction in life. Perhaps you should start a "where should the monthly blogmeet take place this Sunday?" :)

That last post was supposed to end in " thread."

I need more coffee.

FWIW I dislike this time of year, too. The holidays don't bother me, it's the unending grey weather and the lifeless state of nature. But I'm pretty sure I'm just another SAD sufferer, so I just soldier on and think "only three months to spring!"

Wow. Ditto all y'all.

Is it a good thing or a bad thing to that reading about everyone else' misery makes me feel better?

But, as I pointed out to your Roomie, we're past Solstice now. More sunlight today than yesterday.

I hate only being able to add "me too" comments so I'll just shut up and go stand over there.

And this being an adult thing....
Grossly over hyped if you ask me.

Scotch helps; at least for me. Not too much; just a nip when necessary.

Have you explored light therapy? I bet a retrotchnologist could make a seriously awesome light box.

You have made something of yourself! You are a useful member of your community, multiple communities actually, and a source of inspiration for thousands. Well, me, anyway. You fix broken things which makes you talented, and you write, which makes you doubly talented. I have to confess I went to see "It's a Wonderful Life" last week. It may have bumped up my attitude a bit.

I call BS on you "not making anything of yourself."

You occupy a niche in this world that only you could fill, and you do it quite well. You are a good cook, a good friend, a good roomie, a great blogger, an excellent teacher in the area of retrotech, a political force online, a damn fine writer, and a pet lover. Probably a lot more, just all I could come up with on short notice.

Besides, it's been a pet theory of mine that those who excel in one area and do "make a name for themselves" are often very, very deficient in most other areas of human interaction. Personally, I'd much rather hang with you than some of the more driven types who would find the mere idea of "hanging" repulsive because it ate up their valuable time.

Believe me, if you were more driven, you would not be the same and I doubt very seriously if it would be an improvement.
