Chores

...I'd write a long post, but I promised the cats I would swap out their water fountain for a freshly-cleaned one and I'm at least a day late already!

The water around here is very hard, so the little running-water dishes have to be cleaned several times a year.

ETA: Out of four "Drinkwell" cat-waterers (two old style saved for parts, two recent ones) we appear to have exactly one lid for the filter compartment.  How does this happen?  I don't know.

Maybe some distant cousin of the sock gnome?

Or maybe the lids have been caromed under the fridge in a game of kitty hockey?

I favor PTFE chopping board material to cut to size for replacement lids for water-vessels. Doesn't mind humid environment, easy to cut and shape with wood tools, very unlikely to develop mold or mildew, but if it does it is easily cleaned and sterilized. Cut a bit oversize and use cleats to keep it from sliding off, or shape exactly to size with a rabbet.

I'm with fillyjonk, kitty hockey/frisbee.

We use one of those tabletop fountains, and the cats seem to approve. We've been looking at one of the purpose-built fountains, though, if only for the "dishwasher safe" feature.

Use distilled water in the fountain, they last a lot longer and the warranty stays good.

It's not good for the critters.

Cat hockey or the bored cousin of the Sock Fairy sounds like the most likely explanation.

Parts are available, if you feel so inclined:

I see they make them out ceramic as well, to turn that into a cat-toy will build some strong kitty muscles.

Local friend uses the Drinkwell, her house is 90 years old and gets regular visits from the neighborhood mice. She related the story of an Oh-Dark 30 kitchen trip where she noticed the mice were standing on their hind legs, fascinated by the trickling water.

The dogs, of course, were snoring soundly. They awoke when she shrieked.

Her Chow mix turned into a fair mouser, bringing her battered mice...
