I think it was a case similar to "April in Paris". One time a fan of the song complained to the composers that April in Paris was very, very rainy. The composers admitted they really meant May, but the song required a two syllable month. Lehrer HAD to have meant crows.

Tom Lehrer is a bright, bright man and his "Elements" song is an amazing feat of memory and diction.
He would have been fun to have as a professor.
