Goodbye, 2017. You Took Too Many.

Another year goes away and this one takes even more of the faces and names of my youth.  We all end up in a strange, future world if we last long enough, and if we've been paying attention, we know that's how it works for everyone.

Yet I still find myself wanting to ask, "Please, not so soon!  Not so many."  Time's arrow is inexorable.  "The moving finger writes; and, having writ, moves on."*  It slows for no one and nothing.

About twenty-five years ago,I had a beautifully illustrated Fitzgerald translation of the Rubáiyát on my bookshelf.
One of the granddaughters was spending the summer.
Her grandmother had gotten her started on the computer game Titantic.
I knew nothing about the game, but one day while taking a break from a marathon session of the game she stood in the front door and glimpsed the Rubáiyát in our "library."
She stood there for awhile, almost asway, trying to discern reality from fantasy.
I did not know that the goal of the game was to find the Rubáiyát.
The book went to her fledgling "library."
Truly, the finger moves on, as do we.
I hope that copy brings as much happiness and triggers memories for the future owners as it did for the past me.
I miss that book. It was a prize possession and held peaceful memories.
I join you in hoping, in all ways, for a less painful year ahead. We have had enough growth for awhile.

I would hope for and work toward a brighter future, but the dark is doing its best to beat us down. Would we could defeat them but the ying and yang thing will not be denied.

Have to see who passes. I am sure some will pass that I will miss and some won't who I would like to miss.

Have to see how it works out.

Happy new year!
