It is every time they spend my tax dollars on something that I would donate them to if they let me decide, it gets cancelled?
Prisoners at the Westville Correctional Facility had been training animal-shelter dogs to make them adoptable -- and in the hopes that maybe some of the notions about rules and self-discipline might kind of stick with the prisoner/trainers, too. Well, they couldn't justify funding for the one (1) paid staff member who oversaw the prison side of things and the program will end at the end of this month, after a successful eight-year run.
Sheesh.

Is this one of those cases where a popular, useful program is held hostage so that the really scandalous line items don't suffer when the citizens are in a mood to cut spending?

You know Mike, that was my first thought too.
Before I even looked at the comments.
Pennywise Pound Foolish.
Though in this case Kilo-buck "wise" Giga-buck incontinent.
I dunno; they're just axing it.
Don't look too closely at the corrections system in America, it is a cash cow for the wrong people and hasn't deterred crime nor produced amazing success stories. Having said that, many good folks - volunteers, inmates, corrections personnel and some experts have changed some bad folks' lives for everyone's better world. Unfortunately, those aren't enough to overcome the end of the world as we know it.
