If "a mind is a terrible thing to waste" and college is how one keeps from wasting it, why do a significant percentage of college students put a great deal of time and effort into an activity they describe as "getting wasted?"

On the website of a musical group -- okay, it was the Puppini Sisters, h/t to Phlegmmie -- one of them wrote that she'd recently acquired an actual wind-up gramophone...and had learned the actual meaning of the phrase "put a sock in it." You know, I've seen actual mechanical volume controls on wind-up Victrolas and that hadn't occurred to me, but it's gotta be true.

College prof son has no problem with his highly motivated students. They are all working 30 or more hours a week, plus carrying a full academic load. Most get no more than pocket change from their parents.
It is the children of parents who expect college to straighten their wayward children out and mold them into responsible adults that cause trouble.
They don't work, they don't study, and they waste a lot of largely borrowed money getting wasted.
And they will soon be road kill on the highway of life.

Daughter announced yesterday that she want to go to nursing school. First step is to get her CNA.
She's been out of school for 15 years, married for 12 and has three kids. It'll be a rough start I think. But, motivation will help get her where she want to go.
Squeeky Wheel Seeks Grease just had a post about this, from inside the asylum.
