Hah!

You and I, we celebrate the season by spending time with friends and family. The Other Side, they spend it making snarky cracks about the lawful activities of law-abiding individuals.

Just had a comment left by a banned-from-commenting-here anti-freedom guy (he'd love to be mentioned by name; let's just say he's admitted to committing State and Federal firearms felonies and yet remains out of jail -- and out of the U.S.), offering his invidiously warped insight about my comment "I carry a gun so I don't have to be afraid," a notion he ascribes to Marko Kloos. (It's way older than Mr. Kloos' elegant essay -- see, for example, the Savage Automatic Pistol brochure from before WW I, "It Banishes Fear!")

He seems to imply oh yes I am so afraid, nyahh-nyahh.* Wrong-o, slim. And perhaps you've never been as scared as I once was, after getting held up at gunpoint twice (and escaping unharmed only because I resisted), any time I had go outdoors at night. Probably you've never been as pants-wetting scared as I was when it happened.

But I worked a shift that left me no way to avoid commuting in the dark, walking across an unguarded parking lot late at night. So I learned to shoot. I got a carry permit and I bought a gun.

I learned to pay better attention to my surroundings but you know what? It's a lot easier to do that when you are not in fear. I'm cautious, I'm careful and I'm observant -- but I'm not afraid.

No matter how much freedom-hating antis would like to force me to be.

D00d, it's over. The antis have lost big and keep on losing and losing. Keep your hoplophobia outside the U.S., in the same places you're hiding your own sorry ass from legal penalties you have earned by breaking the same kind of laws you'd like to force on everyone else.

And by the way, you're still banned. Didn't you have a blog of your own? Wassamatta, no traffic?

I understand that, in fact, most of his traffic comes from gun bloggers looking to see what he's up--or down--to.

I assume your talking about Nameandnumbers; he tries to get traffic to his blog by his tactics. He is like someone who walks into a room, farts, and then leaves while everyone is holding their noses. Anything for attention.

As Clint Smith said: "If you carry a gun, people will call you paranoid. That's ridiculous. If I have a gun, what in the hell do I have to be paranoid for."

I will never understand the drive to have the bad guys better armed than the good guys.

"You carry a GUN 'cuz you're a-skeered!"

Bah.

Do people buckle their seatbelts because they're scared? Do they lock their doors because they're scared? Do they have insurance because they're scared? Do they keep a first aid kit around because they're scared?

People make rational judgements all the time about potential bad things happening to them and take steps that they deem prudent to avoid, minimize or mitigate those threats. This is not being "scared": it's a perfectly sensible thing to do.*

What a doofus.

(*) And this ties in with being calmly, rationally aware of one's surroundings as you say. "Scared" implies irrational, instinctive, non-thinking, "fight or flight" fear. People who prepare themselves don't typically have this response, which is dangerous not only to themselves but also to other people.

Choosing to legally carry a handgun and making the commitment to consistently do so is more of an indication of maturity and self determination. Once one has recognized the moral responsibility of self protection they tend to do just this. Preparation, caution and vigilance are very proper approaches to living outside of an idealistic bubble.

I've noticed that MikeB3K+ has indeed taken a shine to Marko and fellow gun bloggers. Learning that he's a cohort of Joan Peterson is just icing on the cake. At least he can't goose-step in the Couple-Hundred-Mommies marches when he's hiding from extradition overseas...

Since I have no traffic at my blog, I must blog for myself and not for these mythical "readers" I hear about. I am touched that there are people who do read my ravings, but they aren't the reason for them.

Perhaps I am exceptional in my feelings about the purpose of these things? Perhaps he cannot take the possibility there is nobody reading his inspired words?

Perhaps I have a too-perverse sense of humor (ok, no "perhaps" about it), but I find it all-too-amusing that Bonomo has taken to assaulting the upper crust of the gunblogosphere recently... Us lower-quality/traffic/etc folks have already made it completely clear that his particular brand of attention whoring is not welcome on our sites, so he aims higher? Does he think that folks like you are less likely, for some reason, to call him out as the scumbag he is and move on with your lives? *shrug* Makes no difference either way - he has lost his voice on our sites, and is progressively losing his voice on his own site, so it is only a matter of time before he disappears into the sea of noise that is the intertubes, but it still amuses me...

... Especially because, as usual, he is completely clueless and wrong - 'prepared for' != 'in fear of', and his attempt at conflating those two concepts only illustrates the weakness of his argument.

Yes, he shows up here about once a year, makes a fool of himself and gets slapped down. --And goes away, whining about how he's being repressed.

--Which pretty much tells his entire story in one sentence.
