The party system self selects for (at best) self interested hacks who will always put themselves above the country.
(Actually, I would prefer the political hack to the moralizing "I know what's good for you" crusader.)
I'm not sure it's possible to reform the party system from within the party system.
That probably means we'll limp along with what we have, sometimes better, sometimes worse.
