P.S.: It's Pearl Harbor Day, or, as we sometimes call it in techieville, Pay Attention To The RADAR Day!

I've always thought it ironic that Lt. Tyler wound up (IIRC) as a colonel in NORAD.

On the other hand, if there was ever a man on the planet who would know about "paying attention to the radar", it would be him.

Some of us still remember that it's a "Day which will live in Infamy."

Good point.

From what I can make out, the problem of ignoring the RADAR was mostly a problem with Command&Control not knowing how to use the tool.

Yep. RADAR was shiny-new at the time (it was still an acronym!) and the guy in the best position to know thought the incoming pips were a training (IIRC) flight returning or something equally innocuous.

Better-integrated and more suspicious Traffic Control might have shortened the war in the Pacific -- I think it still would have played out very much along Hector Bywater's predictions.

The problem is that the people of this country wanted peace so badly that they didn't believe that they would ever be attacked. Once attacked, they went into a frenzy and demanded all sorts of ridiculous things that stripped people of their civil rights, like the internment camps.

Same thing happened in 2001. Funny how nothing changes. We are simply doomed to repeat history.
