Your brain is (probably) not shrinking as you age!
Contrarily, as a child, I was terrified when an adult told me, "If you do not use your brain, it will rot in your skull!" Thing is, he was (essentially) correct. On the other hand, the "trashy" science fiction I was reading instead of doing my homework is pretty good brain exercise; on the other other hand, passing Trig on my first attempt would've been better.

Calculus declared war on me some time in the 1960s. I surrendered perhaps too quickly.
"passing Trig on my first attempt would've been better."
But your brain gets more exercise if you take Trig twice!
My Mom used to always tell us in winter that 95% of our body heat was let out through our heads so we had to wear a hat. I once said "OK, fine, we'll go start naked but wear a hat and we'll only be 5% cold". Mom didn't appreciate the comment or the math.
"On the gripping hand" rather than the other other hand perhaps?
How much "trashy" science fiction are we talking about?

hmm, no need to make one up this time. Not in my lexicon either.
Niven/Pournelle collaborations, most certainly; and I think it was in a book in that "universe" so titled that I first encountered crottled greeps, too.
Brigid: what, no shoes? Scandalous!
