I suppose it was heartless of me that my first thought was "Finally, something to get the media off Michael Jackson's corpse!"
I read with some interest, "Under state law, Kennedy's successor will be chosen by special election. In his last known public act, the senator urged state officials to give Democratic Gov. Deval Patrick the power to name an interim replacement. " For a supposed lifelong champion of The People, not to mention Democracy, this seems a tad askew. I guess the wisdom of the electorate is not to be questioned -- unless the outcome might not be to one's liking or the pause to accommodate it inconvenient. The late Senator is beyond such worries now, though we will have several weeks of Televised Mourning to endure; and perhaps with a little more dignity than the immediately previous celebrity death.

That is so Teddie! Circumventing the law, asking for special considerations, right on up to the end... that's what made him so special.
Gawd I despise elitists.
Ding dong the witch is dead.
RIP Ted. As far as selecting his replacement goes its much worse than you think. Back in 2004 when there was a good chance that John Kerry would be the next President, Ted pushed to have the selection process changed. Prior to 04, the governor (then, Republican Mitt Romney) would've selected Kerry's replacement. Ted pushed the state legislature to change to law and requiring a special election. Now that we have a Democrat governor (Deval Patrick) Teddie wanted the law changed back - so that a (presumed) Democrat can vote on Obama's Healthcare package.... Welcome to Mass Politics!
A traitor to the Republic to the last.
I heard this news this morning while in the shower. I'm an Elder in our church, so I tried to think of something complimentary. When that failed, I tried to think of something more neutral.
That didn't work either. But, I'm still a work-in-progress as are we all.
Good-bye, Swimmer. Say Hello to Mary Jo. On second thought, you probably won't.
I've heard the late, unlamented Senator referred to as, "the lion of the Senate".
The only ways this could be true were if it were phrased as, "The Cowardly Lion of the Senate", or perhaps even better, "The Lyin' of the Senate".
Kennedy was not a hero to the American People. He was a tragedy, as I provided this opinion at my site. He was self serving, even up to the end... including an attempt to disallow the people of MA the right to vote on his replacement! This guy is a symbol of everything that is wrong with the American Political System. I mourn for the loss of a human life, but celebrate another Kennedy Liberal out of the Political Scene!
I was going to be polite, honoring the premise if you can't say anything nice... Then comes word Ted Kennedy will be buried beside his brothers Robert and Jack, in Arlington National Cemetery. Where I have both friends and family interred. And I drive past EVERY DAY.
"Interim replacement" as in "between the time of death and the special election".
James,
Maybe instead of an eternal flame, they'll install an eternal stream of piss.
Here's hopin'.
Too bad you are an atheist, Roberta. Those of us who believe in an after life can take comfort in the thought of Ted Kennedy being waterboarded for eternity in Hell as payback for Mary Jo.
The mention of the Swimmer being buried at Arlington conjured up the sight of the earth rejecting his corpse, vomiting it into the Potomac ... as if to say, "That's where you belong ... in the watah!"
Regards.
Well, I suspect the spits closest to the fire in the eternal barbecue have another guest tonight.
Anon, who said I was an atheist? Tsk, wrong. I'm not that sure of anything I cannot measure.
Ted Kennedy was a cancer in the body politic. He was a fat, drunken bumbler whose only qualifications for office were his family fortune, based on his fathers bootlegging gangsterism, and his dead brothers. His Senate legacy is corruption of the Constitution and a perversion of the founding fathers ideals.
Rot in Hell Teddy!

Starting the day off with news of a Dead Kennedy is enough to put me in a good mood.
Still, tomorrow is going to be like getting up the day after Christmas... I mean, what have I got to look forward to NOW??
