I'm surprised someone mentioned imagery in a 100 year old movie. Most leftists don't know past 10 years ago, and probably did the RCA Victor Dog head cock and had to do a web search on Birth ... to see what the author was referring to.

In my book, Wilson has long tied FDR for "worst antebellum pre-Carter president".
And after that Nipper impression, they find that D. W. Griffith did not actually treat Klansmen like pond scum, and they reach into their pockets for the nearest race card. It's never far away.
...I am of the opinion that Klansmen, then and now, are pond scum. It is vaguely possible that the very first such organization, in the very first flush of its existence, was an actual Confederate-veterans outfit, but that did not last; gen 1 became so bad, in fact, that Nathan Bedford Forrest the former CSA General who was its first Grand frikkin' Wizard and one of the men who observed it could be a tool to re-establish white dominance, ordered the Klan to disband in 1869, stating that it was "being perverted from its original honorable and patriotic purposes, becoming injurious instead of subservient to the public peace."
The Klan are now and have always been a bunch of murderers, operating outside the law and initiating force against persons and property. Such men are to be dealt with as wolves are. If, from time to time, the forces of the other other side included corrupt politicians and the like, it still does not excuse the Klansmen's actions.
If any reader has a problem with that, they can get the hell out. I won't put up with it.
