Did you have to do an environmental impact study first? Eight feet down, you never know what you might run into.
Not sure what you use to connect to that rod, but we saw a demo of these - http://www.erico.com/products/plusoneshot.asp earlier this summer.

It's is down to earth, hey? (73, Don!)
Nope, Jeff, no one-shot, but aren't they seriously kewl? We (actually hired-gun electricians, it was 500MCM copper and bigger) did a bunch at work when we regrounded the big tower! Thermite....
I use the hardware that comes with the rod: a bronze or brass collar with a bolt. Collar goes around the ground rod. The bolt side goes on the far side from the wire and it clamps the wire right to the ground rod. I used semi-fat stranded wire, about .25" OD, which I am too lazy to look up -- #4, I think.
"Environmental impact:" you do have to make sure the utilities aren't close by, which mine aren't.
